This weekend I am home for Ganesh festival, which is huge in my city (Pune). I got to spend some time on my dad's new iPad2. First thing I did when I got my hands on it, was download Sketchbook Pro for iPad and draw!

I made a quick drawing of my niece Tanvi, she liked it.

Some more Sketchbook pages from last year.

Observing people is a fun exercise for Animators, but there is too much happening out there to take in. Very little from what I observe is saved back in my little piece of brain. Thats why I like doing gesture-drawing a lot. When I am drawing people I tend to observe them in a better way. It gives me time to think about whats going on with them, what kind of person that could be? what does their body language say? whats happening in their posture mechanics-wise? what's their relation to the people they are with? what does their way of dressing tell or hide about them? among many other things.
This way I hope to build a memory bank of behaviour, poses, ideas, characters that I could some day subconsciously be able to apply to the characters I am animating.

For example, theres a lot happening in the above sketch of a couple. I'll leave up to you to figure out what it could be.

Anyway, drawing is just too much fun to do, even if you dont think of it as an "exercise"!

Tinkerbell - Animation shots

You might be wondering why is this called my "Animation and Sketch blog" when most posts are just sketches :) So here you go - some of my animation from early last year.

At my previous job at Prana Studios, I worked on the direct-to-DVD film Disney's "Tinkerbell and the Great Fairy Rescue". I've put together the shots I animated. This is my first professional work! Not that the animation in my shots here is anything great, just happy that these are my first shots as a professional animator.

My mind was wandering and just thought what if Gordon Freeman just walked into a coffee shop? After all, he should get some rest from hacking zombies and head-crabs. Then I thought of taking it further a bit.

Happy 2011 folks! Hope you had a good celebration ushering the New year.
I had a nice holiday break and it was very relaxing. I also found time to scan some of my sketchbook drawings from last few months. I just love to go out and draw - its fun, relaxing and also a study in people, behavior and poses. Here are some of the sketches to start with.

This is one of the many 'watch sellers' on Brigade road. They seem to sell either fake or used branded watches - they are too many of them!
